What ethical engineering can make possible.

The next expression of 1854

1854’s story began with bicycles and a belief that what we make should carry meaning. Today, that work takes a new form: the Hayden, a full-size electric SUV. Follow the people, ideas, and decisions shaping what comes next.

Energy

No cobalt. Not a compromise. The point.

Why sodium-ion

Most electric vehicles run on lithium. The chemistry works until the temperature drops. At minus 20°C, lithium-ion packs typically hold 50 to 70 percent of their capacity. Our sodium-ion cell holds about 90.

Our cells are rated for more than 10,000 charge cycles. Lithium-ion cells are typically rated for 1,000 to 5,000.

There is no cobalt in the pack and no lithium. Sodium is among the most abundant elements on Earth.

Solid state is promising. All-solid-state packs are not yet in series production in passenger cars. Sodium-ion is entering them now.

The trade is energy density. We design the Hayden around it.
